Make a plan, plan to follow through

There is a part in all of us that desires to grow in life. We dream of accomplishing goals and reaping the rewards of a job well done.  But how does that actually work? How do we turn those well-intentioned dreams into a reality?

I was working with a client recently who was asked to sing at a wine-tasting event. She was so excited over the opportunity but also  very nervous. It probably would have been easier for her to decline the offer than it would to put in the work needed to “show up” that day. However, this was a wonderful opportunity for her to showcase her brilliance and take small steps towards her dreams.

The days leading up to the event were filled with doubt, focus, practices, questions- yup- it was a bag full of emotions. Yet, she bravely continued to take steps forward. So, what were some of the practical steps she took that you can apply to achieving your own goals?

1. Make a plan

Start with point A (where you are) and point B (where you want to be), then consider the steps that you would need to take to bridge that gap.  Be sure to include any obstacles that you can foresee and how you might overcome them.

2. Make a list of benefits

Without expectation at the end of your effort, it’s really easy to get stopped by problems. If you list out all of the rich rewards of achieving your goal, you’re more likely to stick with it through the difficulties and achieve success.

3. Get going and follow through

Now that you know where you’re going, how to get there, and what you’ll have once you’ve arrived, get started…and KEEP GOING. No matter what happens, don’t give up. Follow through with your plan every step of the way, and when you find yourself falling short, know that there is a new day to start fresh again.

Yes, there were days that my client didn’t practice. There were days that fear and doubt took over. And there were days where she continued to press through, to follow through on the actions she laid for herself.

You don’t have to know every step of the journey or every obstacle that you’re going to face, but you can easily establish a basic framework that will help keep you on track along the way.
